Hats off to Miss Fisher!

Last week I visited the 'Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries Costume Exhibit' held at Old government house in Parramatta, Sydney. I absolutely love the TV show which is based on the books by Kerry Greenwood, and the costumes are divine! The costume designer Marion Boyce was not surprisingly the winner for the AACTA Award for best costume design on television. If you get the chance, whether you are interested in Miss Fisher, sewing, fashion, period clothing, or anything 1920's you should really go to see it. The clothes are even better in real life!

I thought I'd share a series of some pics of what I saw, so I'll start with one of my secret passions...HATS!
The first was my absolute favourite. It is a grey felt cloche hat with overlayed felt pieces and some spectacular bead work:

If you have seen the series, you will enjoy matching the hats to the many gorgeous outfits worn by Miss Fisher (played by Essie Davis). Even if you haven't seen a single episode (which you should totally rectify by watching re-runs on ABC) these hats are well worth seeing!

All of the hats follow the trends of the 1920's, which meant having a completely matching outfit. Many of the accents have been coordinated by dying feathers, tinting ribbons, and colouring buttons to match the outfit perfectly. No wonder this ensemble of clothes are award winners!
The beautiful bead work and appliques are exquisite!

Did you know that the Cloche hat was invented by milliner Caroline Reboux in 1908. The name 'cloche' comes from the french word for 'bell' and refers to the shape of the hat.

So if you get the chance, make sure you head out to the exhibition which ends on the 1st of June 2014.
It's no mystery - the exhibition is to die for!
